REPSSI Teachers Diploma (TD) in Psychosocial Care, Support and Protection

The Teachers’ Diploma in Psychosocial Care, Support and Protection is a sixteen-month Situated Supported Distance Learning (SSDL) programme delivered and accredited by a recognized teacher training institution in each country, on behalf of REPSSI. Currently the TD is being delivered in Zambia and Lesotho. Please contact info@repssi.org for more information on possibilities for other countries.

The TD consists of six generic modules

Building Blocks for a Caring School
 
Module Outcome
 
The teacher is able to use key psychosocial support theoretical concepts and assessment to analyse the school’s psychosocial environment and develop a plan to improve it.
 
 
MODULE 2
 
 
Realizing your Potential as a Champion for Children
 
Module Outcome
 
Teacher is able to apply social and psychology theory and skills to review self-identity and balance personal, professional and community demands.
 
 
MODULE 3
 
 
Realizing the Potential of Children and Youth
 
Module Outcome
 
Teacher is enabled, empowered and motivated to effectively partner with their learners to help them develop socially, emotionally and cognitively to become healthier, happier and more fulfilled.

Realizing the Potential of your Classroom
 
Module Outcome
 
Teacher demonstrates social and emotional teaching skills in creating a caring and protective classroom culture that promotes learning, interaction, participation, expression and support by all children.

Realizing the Potential of your School
 
Module Outcome
 
Teacher demonstrates skills and knowledge to mobilize school leadership, governance and management to improve the school’s social and physical environment and implement policies to realize the potential of the school as a centre of learning and care.

School and community partnerships to realize children’s potential
 
Module Outcome
 
Teacher is able to apply skills and knowledge of their role as a community development facilitator to engage the community in dialogue and document and share the stories of change in their school community.

Programme Delivery Structure
 
Delivered in-service.
Monthly Community of Practice (CoP) sessions to discuss issues they are learning in the modules and how they are implementing what they are learning within their schools.
Each CoP elects a leader and deputy leader responsible for ensuring the group meets and will report any challenges to the District education officials as well as the Teacher Training institution.
 
 
 
Why mainstream PSS in education?
 
The goals of delivering the Teachers’ Diploma include:
Normalisation and guaranteed state of mental wellbeing necessary for learning to effectively take place;
Addressing the vulnerability of adolescents and youth to key drivers of HIV infection;
Mitigating the effects of risks such as poverty, abuse and neglect, which have a negative effect on child and youth learning.

I have been working with Children and Youth for a long period of time and I saw this as an opportunity to gain additional knowledge on how to better my skills in co – ordinating the Children’s Program. Working with the communities requires particular skills because of the varied opinions and for me to run a successful community program, I need to learn how to involve the community so that they are engaged and participate in finding solutions. I also desired to gain a certificate that would support the experience I have in working with children and youth

What I learned

I enjoyed the course because it is very practical and applicable in my work. It was easy to combine theory and practice during the training. We currently work with households and I gained skills on how to ensure that members of the household are involved and their views incorporated to inform the programs

Future

Psychosocial support is important not only to the children but to every human being. I am going to take better care of myself so that I can be able to work or take care of other community members

I was eager to gain knowledge on how to tactfully deal with issues encountered in the community on child protection and trust

What I learned

To bring change to a community, one must be able to bring people together and get solutions by involving them. I have been equipped on how to turn family hostility to positive energy that will support their children and youth in the community

Future

Psychosocial support is important not only to orphans and vulnerable children, but to everyone. It gives hope and encouragement because without hope, there is no continuity of life

Motivation to attend the programme

I initially joined the children’s department as a driver with my first post in Nairobi and later I was transferred to Kisumu. I am passionate about football. During my free time I would coach the children in football at the Kisumu Remand home, since then I developed great interest in children. It was surprising to me that a child could be charged with crimes like murder and I wanted to help them

What I learned

Self-care is very important and no matter how much I may want to save the world, I wouldn’t attain it without caring for myself first. Sometime ago, I watched a documentary on TV titled, ‘Teens of Seme’, a program that highlighted girls who had resulted to sex work due to lack of role models and the harsh environment surrounding them. Being a father to a girl, I got concerned and saw the need to offer my support through the skills that I have acquired

Future

Psychosocial support is important because it brings out the inner energy and helps one to attain a different view point. Orphans and vulnerable children need that hope
