The Africa Psychosocial Support Institute (APSSI) is a subsidiary of REPSSI. APSSI fosters professionalism and excellence in Mental Health and Psychosocial care and support (MHPSS) services by offering innovative, quality Afrocentric psychosocial support (PSS) education, research, programming resources and technical guidance. The Institute was initiated in 2016 as part of a broader response to the need for standardised PSS definitions and terms, quality research and data on PSS, formalised PSS capacity development, excellent PSS resources and MHPSS thought leadership.

APSSI offers
  • Skills development through delivering accredited training programmes. Currently the Institute has two programmes that are running which are:

REPSSI’s Teachers’ Diploma in Psychosocial Care, Support and Protection©

A 6 to 8 module, in-service, distance learning diploma delivered in partnership with recognised teacher training institutions in each country. The programme has also been integrated into pre-service training by two teacher training colleges in Eswatini. Certificate in Community Based Work with Children and Youth© A 6 module situated, supported distance learning programme to professionalise community-based care for children and youth. The course enables the most vulnerable grassroots communities to access quality psychosocial support and quality education. Practical application of the course is facilitated by mentors, some of whom reside within the communities and therefore are readily accessible to the learners. The programme is currently delivered in partnership with 8 academic institutions across the East and Southern African Region. It is quality assured by the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
